Located in the upper part of Myanmar, Bagan (Pagan) was the capital of the first Myanmar dynasty. The city is one of the country’s top attractions. Bagan is full of the ancient buildings and architecture designs that were built from 11th to 13th century, during the Kingdom’s height. Pagodas can be found mostly covered in reddish color and religious monuments. It is estimated there are over 2,000 temples and stupas are located in the area. The city is also a great place of local fine arts with lacquer-ware, bamboo arts and nice local tradition clothing…, which are the maintained to remind the beauty of the ancient capital. Bagan has perfect climate. There is no rainy season like any lower parts of Myanmar so visitors can go to Bagan all year round.
Ananda Temple
Ananda Temple is one of four surviving temples left in Bagan, It was damaged badly in the earthquake in 1975 but has been successfully restored and well maintained by frequent painting and whitewashing. The impressive temple itself also has been called the “Westminster Abbey of Burma” and “veritable museum of stones”. Today Ananda Temple is recognized as the best preserved and most revered site of Bagan temples.
Location: South-east of Tharabar Gate in Old Bagan.
BAGAN ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM
This Bagan attraction is the ideal place for tourists who want to explore the history and see objects during ancient Bagan period. The first floor houses the showrooms for visual arts and coiffures of court ladies, while the second floor has display rooms with religious themes.
Bu Pagoda
Bu Pagoda is asancient pagoda located at a bend on the right bank of the Ayeyarwady River. The name of Pagoda gives a perfect description: ‘a gourd-shaped pagoda”. Bu Pagoda is a most notable shrine among the thousands of new or ruined Buddhist sites in Bagan.
Dhammayangyi Temple
The Dhammayangyi Temple is the largest temple and the one of four major Bagan monuments, and ranks alongside Shwezigon Pagoda, Ananda Temple and Thatbyinnyu Temple in importance.
Htilominlo Temple
Htilominlo Temple was built in 1218, during the reign of King Nantaungmya. The name is said to be a misreading of the Pali term for 'Blessings of the Three Worlds.'
Shwezigon Pagoda
A interesting trip in Bagan is required to get to Shwezigon Pagoda, the most significant shrine of Bagan. It is said that the structure was built to enshrine one of the four replicas of the Buddha’s tooth in Kandy, Sri Lanka.
Thatbyinnyu Temple
Thatbyinnyu Temple, whose name means “Omniscience”, is the highest temple of Bagan. It was built in the 12th century by King Alaungsithu.
Sulmani Temple
Found in Minnanthu region, Sulmani Temple is well known for its sophisticated style.
