Kuthodaw Pagoda

Kuthodaw Pagoda, known as “The World’s Largest Book”, was built in 1957 by King Mindon. What make this pagoda so special are 729 stone-inscription caves surrounding the main Stupa.
Each cave contains a marble slab inscribed Buddha’s teaching. It is said that 2,400 monks took six months to read the whole slabs during the Fifth Buddhist Synod of 1872. Visitors going to the Pagoda can pay obeisance to the Buddha Image, and enjoy sweet recreation beneath the sweet-smelling, cool, shady trees.

Location: Base of the south-east stairways to Mandalay Hill.
