The name Botahtaung means “One thousand officers” due to the legend: there were thousand military leaders escorting the relic of Buddha all the way from India to Myanmar. It is also said that two sacred hairs and unspecified amount of treasures have been buried beneath the pagoda.

The time of the construction of this Pagoda coincides with that of Shwedagon and the Sule Pagoda, some 2500 years back. 

Botahtaung features quirky charms and peculiarities. Tourists are allowed to walk inside to see the hollow architecture. Botahtaun Pagoda gives an impression of mirrored maze with glass show-cases containing many ancient relics and artifacts which were sealed. Above the interesting interior, the golden pagoda spire rises to the height of 40 meters. 

The festival of Botahtaun Pagoda is annual celebrated in dry season. The overnight performance of a cultural theatrical group will be the unforgettable experience for every audience.
